This morning, October 26, the newly redeveloped spaces of the National Archaeological Museum of Cividale del Friuli (MAN) are being inaugurated. The project’s vision was to transform the museum into a space that is "accessible, inclusive, and participatory." This guiding principle invites the public to rediscover a true treasure trove—part of a UNESCO World Heritage site—that safeguards the Roman and Longobard heritage, as well as other historical layers of the city and the broader territory that once comprised the first Longobard duchy established in Italy by King Alboin (568 AD). In doing so, the MAN reaffirms its historical significance - within the context of the cultural Route "Longobard Ways across Europe" - as a component of the network "Sources of European Culture – Longobard primary root". Other co-founding members of this network include the Museum and Treasury of the Monza Cathedral, the Schwedenspeicher Museum in Stade (Germany), the Natural History Museum in Vienna, the Hungarian National Museum in Budapest, and several key historical archives. The project involved the redevelopment of the lapidary courtyard and the garden, expanding the usable exhibition areas and opening the institution to new generations. Under the scientific direction of Dr. Angela Borzacconi, Director of the MAN, the work was carried out based on an architectural design by the firm Barreca & La Varra, with funding provided by the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan)—specifically under Mission 1, which focuses on enhancing accessibility to cultural sites.
