Chiesa di S.Pietro Martire

The church is named after a Dominican monk, Pietro, killed in 1252 by the pataria heretics while he was travelling from Como to Milan. The construction could have taken place slightly later considering that in 1288 the Dominican Order was already present in Monza. The first official document citing the Church of San Pietro martire dates back to 1369.

Throughout its history, the church – to which a convent with a cloister was annexed (still existing to this day) – had much work done: the apse was remade for the first time in 1645; the convent was closed in 1776; the apse was adjusted again in 1817 and in the same year changes to the bell tower were carried out. Other work was performed during the last century.

Inside the church, fragments of 14th-century pictures and the 17th-century wooden choir have been preserved. St. Prospero Martire’s body was brought from the catacombs of Rome to Monza and is kept in an urn under the altar.
