Highlighting european Values

Each of the four European macro-areas of the Longobard Route is divided into multiple Identity Clusters (ID Clusters). These small territories are thus named, collectively characterized by historical elements related to the historical presence of the Longobards and by their own geomorphological and naturalistic characteristics that make each Cluster unique and "irreproducible," lending it its own exclusive identity. Furthermore, in each ID Cluster, the Museums and Historical Archives, custodians of the artefacts of early medieval material and documentary culture, are privileged destinations. Likewise, civil and religious buildings, monuments, and works of art are brought to the attention of visitors, and the natural riches of the places (geosites, UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, parks and protected areas, panoramic views) are highlighted as complementary elements. These provide—albeit modified by time—a "modernized" visual experience of the territories inhabited by the Longobard people and offer additional destinations of tourist interest.

Structurally, each ID Cluster includes the areas of several smaller municipalities with their respective historical, monumental, and traditional resources that fuel the common thread of the Longobard narrative and enhance current tourist interest with their respective hospitality offerings, including excellence in the agri-food, food and wine, and artistic crafts sectors.

The system adopted, in addition to creating a multiplicity of tourist destinations (the individual ID Clusters), fosters the development of other vital aspects of the Route: affirming the uniqueness of the Cluster (competitive advantage); initiating targeted research and development activities; creating the conditions of interest to strengthen every possible cooperation at the local, national, and international levels between public and private institutions, businesses, and other vital entities in the individual territories; and stimulating—especially among younger generations—a more complete understanding of European history and culture, as well as the history, traditions, and potential of their own territory.
